Last year at the Veterinary Pathology Group (VPG), we announced our partnership with Scopio Labs, which allowed us to bring the first in-practice high resolution rapid digital cytology solution to veterinary practices in the UK and Ireland.
Since then, we have enabled many practices to scan and send high resolution digital cytology and haematology images from the point of care to a global network of clinical pathologists.
One of the practices who have reaped the benefits of digital cytology is Vets4Pets, who have recently had scanners installed in two of their locations: Guernsey and Worcester.
Dr Les Van Blerk, Owner and Veterinary Surgeon at Vets4Pets Guernsey commented:
“ScopioVet digital cytology allows us to streamline our cytology processes and reports back within 1 hour allowing us to make the best decisions, either medically or surgically, 24 hours a day. This is very important to us given our remote location in the UK”.
Case study:
Dr Van Blerk also provided details of a specific case that benefited from the fast turnaround times and enabled quicker treatment and diagnostic decisions:
A patient (dog) was admitted with a splenic mass and numerous skin lumps, who they were unable to examine because the patient was extremely aggressive.
The patient was given general anaesthetic and a cytology sample was taken before the patient was transferred to theatre to have a splenectomy.
As the ScopioVet scanners provide results within 1 hour, the practice was able to receive the cytology results once the splenectomy was completed and the three skin tumours were removed within the same anaesthetic.
